Morpho Labs takes the yield lead as Compound and Aave struggle

Morpho Labs achieves 10% to 20% APY through specialized MetaMorpho vault aggregators, outperforming Aave and Compound. While Aave targets $6 billion in idle capital with its v4 upgrade, Compound faces yield compression and deployment delays across its V3 Comet markets.

Morpho Labs takes the yield lead as Compound and Aave struggle

Morpho Labs captured significant interest with its MetaMorpho vault aggregator following a $3 billion rehypothecation market cap. The Morpho architecture uses an immutable, permissionless base layer where curators define asset sets and strategy logic. These curators manage risk through specialized logic, unlike the standardized, conservative models used by Aave or Compound. Morpho v2 introduces Markets v2 and Vaults v2 to support fixed-rate, fixed-term loans with customizable parameters. While Morpho focuses on efficiency through specialization, the protocol also faces liquidity concentration risks.

Morpho sUSDC Vault Spec Value
MUX3LP-sUSDC-1 Liquidity 18.73k sUSDC
MUX3LP-sUSDC-4 Liquidity 18.73k sUSDC
MUX3LP-sUSDC-2 Liquidity 18.73k sUSDC
MUX3LP-sUSDC-3 Liquidity 18.73k sUSDC
Supply Cap per Vault $20.87k
LLTV 62.5%

One user, 0x3d1B…0F9a, holds 93,516.8 sUSDC, representing 99.89% of all deposits. This concentration shows how a few actors control the liquidity in these vaults. Morpho vaults achieve 10% to 20% APY environments by allowing curated vaults to implement recursive lending loops. These loops involve a user depositing collateral, borrowing against it, swapping the borrowed asset, and depositing it again to repeat the cycle. Morpho curators can also target specific utilization zones to steer yield, whereas Aave responds passively to borrow demand.

Aave v4 and the problem of idle capital

Aave maintains a 60% market share of total deposits and borrows in 2025. The upcoming Aave v4 introduces a Hub and Spoke model to improve modularity and liquidity. Developers plan to use a reinvestment module to direct unused liquidity into community-approved strategies like short-term treasury bills. This module targets the $6 billion in idle stablecoin capital to increase average stablecoin yields from 4% to 4.9%.

Aave Yield Projection Percentage
Current Stablecoin Yield 4%
Projected Stablecoin Yield 4.9%
Target Yield Increase 25%

The Aave v4 E-Mode Spokes optimize lending for correlated assets like stablecoins. This approach attempts to solve the liquidity fragmentation that affects Aave’s current v3 architecture. However, Aave remains a provider of standardized risk, meaning it lacks the specialized strategy layer that Morpho curators deploy. Even with the v4 upgrade, Aave must manage the transition of its massive user base while internal management disputes persist.

Compound faces isolation and deployment delays

Compound operates through V3 Comet markets that isolate risk to a single base asset. This design prevents a failure in one market from spreading to others, but it also limits the scale of individual pools. Compound users see USDC supply APYs between 3.5% and 5.8% depending on the specific chain and utilization. ETH supply yields typically range from 0.5% to 3.5%. Compound provides no platform fees beyond interest and gas.

Compound V3 Market Details Fact
Collateral Factor 81-87%
Liquidation Penalties 5-10%
Governance Token COMP
COMP Total Supply 10 million

The protocol has deployed across ten chains, including Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism. While Compound offers a conservative experience for institutional users, its yields often lag during low utilization periods. I find the Compound governance process frustratingly slow when it comes to protocol updates. The protocol also faces technical hurdles, including a recent race condition reported in February 2026. Compound v3 also relies heavily on oracles for pricing, which remains an inherent risk. Will the expansion to more chains satisfy the users who find Compound too slow to innovate? The protocol must still contend with the fact that its V2 model was deprecated in December 2025.
