Guide to Christie’s October 2026 AI-generated NFT auction
Christie's prepares for an October 2026 AI-generated NFT auction following Refik Anadol's MoMA residency. The digital art market continues to evolve as NFT sales currently comprise 2% of the global art market.
Anadol and the Christie’s controversy
Refik Anadol uses StyleGAN2 ADA to process 138,151 pieces of MoMA metadata for the "Unsupervised" project, and the machine uses subsets of the MoMA collection to create embeddings in 1024 dimensions. This method uses 200 years of art to produce abstract shapes. Anadol collects data from digital archives and publicly available resources, then processes these datasets with machine-learning classification models. He works in dialogue with scholars like Jaakko Lehtinen of NVIDIA Research to develop these technologies. Anadol’s "Living Architecture: Casa Batllo" sold for $1.38 million. Christie’s held an "Augmented Intelligence" auction from February 20 to March 5, 2025, which included artists like Sasha Stiles, Holly Herndon, and Alexander Reben. This auction drew backlash from 3,500 artists who signed a letter claiming the models exploit human artists. The letter, addressed to Nicole Sales Giles and Sebastian Sanchez, expresses concern that the artworks used AI models known to be trained on copyrighted work without a license or payment to the original creators. These artists claim that Christie’s support of AI art incentivizes the mass theft of human work. Nicole Sales Giles, the director of digital art at Christie’s, said the training process constitutes influence rather than theft.
Sotheby’s expansion and market data
Sotheby’s manages the "Metaverse" platform where collectors use avatars designed by Pak. The sale runs from October 18 to October 26, and current data indicates that NFT sales comprise 2% of the global art market.
| Auction / Asset | Date / Stat |
|---|---|
| Christie’s AI Auction | Feb 20 – March 5, 2025 |
| Sotheby’s Natively Digital | Oct 18 – Oct 26 |
| NFT Market Share | 2% of global market |
| Anadol Memento Editions | 5,000 units |
The auction house also sold a painting by the AI artist Ai-Da for over $1 million last year. This follows the $69.3 million Beeple sale that Christie’s conducted in March. Anadol’s project at MoMA is based on works encoded on the blockchain. These mementos are available via QR code on the second floor outside the Marron Atrium. You should watch the price floor for Anadol collections like "Winds of Yawanawa" or "Synthetic Dreams" if you want to buy into this niche. The "Machine Hallucinations" series includes subsets like "NYC" and "Space – DAFA". Beeple posted an artwork titled "The War of Art" on social media which depicts a robot correcting a letter with red ink while holding a leash on a tiny human. Can collectors truly verify the ethics of these automated processes?
Regulatory and tool shifts
The FFIEC removed the Cybersecurity Assessment Tool from its website on August 31, 2025. This tool provided a way for financial institutions to identify risks and determine cybersecurity preparedness. The FFIEC released the tool in June 2015. The agency decided not to update the tool to include the National Institute of Standards and Technology Cybersecurity Framework 2.0. It also decided not to include the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s Cybersecurity Performance Goals. Institutions must now use other resources to manage current cybersecurity risks, and the FFIEC provides a banker webinar this Fall to discuss these alternative resources. The FFIEC released a statement on August 29, 2024, to announce the sunset of the tool. One year was provided for evaluating alternative resources and tools. Analysis of the transition should have begun immediately with a goal of using a new tool by August 31, 2025.
