Ether.fi eETH vs Renzo ezETH comparison

Ether.fi reduces EigenLayer exposure to under 1% to mitigate slashing risks, while Renzo faces potential REZ token sell pressure from governance unlocks. Symbiotic enters the market as a modular restaking competitor with $2.3 billion in total value locked during testnet.

Ether.fi unwinds EigenLayer ties

Mike Silagadze intends to unwind the final structural connection between Ether.fi and EigenLayer during this current quarter. This move reduces restaked assets to less than 1% of the total protocol holdings. Silagadze argues that restaking risks remain high while economic benefits no longer provide meaningful returns. Specifically, restaking secures $10 billion in assets but generates only $99,977 in weekly fees. Standard liquid staking yields exceed these restaking returns by approximately 53 times. I find this retreat logical because the top five liquid restaking tokens saw gross profits drop from $2.18 million to $953,400 in only three quarters. As Ether.fi moves to reduce its restaked assets to below 1% of the total, it effectively de-risks its platform from the volatile EigenLayer AVS slashing events that continue to plague the broader restaking ecosystem. Ether.fi also encourages participation through loyalty points, giving 10,000 points for every 0.1 ETH staked through its refer-a-fren program. For those using the Cash card, the protocol awards 100,000 $ETHFI for deposits and 300,000 $ETHFI for spend rewards, with payouts occurring 60 days after November 30. The current season runs from September 15, 2024, until January 31, 2025.

Renzo faces governance sell pressure

Renzo faces a different reality as the REZ token price is $0.004831. The REZ price fell 6.91% in the last 24 hours, while the predicted closing price for tomorrow is $0.004598. You should watch the upcoming governance unlocks for massive sell pressure. For wallets holding more than 500,000 ezPoints, the protocol releases 50% of the tokens at the Token Generation Event and unlocks the remaining portion over three months. This heavy concentration in whale hands makes the REZ price highly vulnerable to sudden crashes. The project requires a minimum of 260 ezPoints to qualify for airdrop eligibility, and the airdrop portion is 12% of the total supply. The total supply of REZ is 10,000,000,000 tokens, and the initial circulating supply is 1,050,000,000 tokens. Renzo’s ezETH also saw a sudden depeg in April, where the price fell from $3,245 to $2,755 within thirty minutes. Since April 26, 2026, ezETH is backed by native ETH only.

Metric Ether.fi (eETH) Renzo (ezETH)
EigenLayer exposure Under 1% target Full dependency
Current REZ Price N/A $0.004831
Governance Unlocks Minimal 50% for large holders
Backing Type Liquid Staking Native ETH

Symbiotic enters the competition

Symbiotic recently launched a feature-complete restaking protocol with $5.8 million in seed funding led by Paradigm and cyber.Fund. This modular design allows networks to manage restaking implementations autonomously. It provides a coordination layer that avoids external governance risks through immutable core contracts. Symbiotic’s architecture includes Collateral, Vaults, Operators, Resolvers, and Networks. The protocol has already attracted over 40 projects, including Ethena and Omni, to its ecosystem. During testnet activity, the protocol saw 75 network deployments and $2.3 billion in total value locked. I view Symbiotic as a direct threat to the market share held by Renzo. Renzo relies heavily on EigenLayer AVS adoption and ezETH usage in DeFi to maintain its value. Because Renzo depends so heavily on EigenLayer, its users face more slashing risk than those using Ether.fi’s diversifying strategy. By allowing for the restaking of various assets including ERC20 tokens and DeFi liquidity positions, Symbiotic provides a flexible environment that directly challenges the market dominance of established liquid restaking protocols like Renzo. Will Symbiotic’s permissionless approach eventually capture the liquidity that currently supports Renzo’s ezETH?
